Nobody reviews mosquito repellers for BBQ sites. But after losing count of the times I slapped mosquitoes while trying to manage a fire, this needed to be said.

## The Problem Nobody Talks About Every BBQ review focuses on the grill, the fuel, the thermometer. Nobody talks about the mosquitoes. But if you grill in the southern US, the Midwest, or basically anywhere with standing water within a mile, you know the truth: mosquitoes ruin more cooks than bad temperature control ever will. Standing over a hot grill in the evening, sweating, smelling like meat — you are a mosquito magnet. The Thermacell Patio Shield promises to fix this without sprays, without chemicals on your skin, and without that citronella candle that does absolutely nothing. And it largely delivers. ## How It Works The Patio Shield uses a butane cartridge to heat a small mat infused with allethrin, a synthetic version of a natural insecticide found in chrysanthemums. The heated mat releases allethrin into the air, creating a protection zone of approximately 15 feet in diameter. No flame, no smoke, no smell. Setup takes 30 seconds: insert butane cartridge, place mat, turn it on, wait 15 minutes for the zone to establish. ## Does It Actually Work Yes. In my testing across eight evening grilling sessions in mosquito-heavy conditions, the Patio Shield reduced mosquito contact by roughly 80-90%. It does not create an impenetrable barrier — an occasional mosquito gets through, especially in windy conditions — but the difference between using it and not using it is dramatic. The 15-foot zone is optimistic. In calm conditions, I would estimate effective coverage at 10-12 feet. In any breeze above 5 mph, the zone shrinks further. Position it upwind of your grilling area for best results. ## Running Costs The unit itself costs about $25-30. Refill mats and butane cartridges run about $8-10 per 12-hour set. If you grill two evenings per week during mosquito season (roughly May-September), expect to spend $60-80 per season on refills. Not cheap, but cheaper than the medical bills from West Nile virus. ## Limitations Wind is the enemy. Any meaningful breeze disperses the allethrin before it can establish a zone. This is a calm-evening tool. The butane cartridge lasts about 12 hours and the mats about 4 hours each — you need to monitor and replace during long sessions. Allethrin is toxic to cats, fish, and aquatic invertebrates. Keep it away from fish ponds and do not use it around cats. For humans and dogs, the EPA considers it safe at these concentrations.

The Verdict

Thermacell Patio Shield — Mosquito-Free Grilling Is Real, and It Changes Everything

Thermacell Patio Shield

7.1/10

The Thermacell Patio Shield solves a real problem that every outdoor cook faces but nobody addresses. It works in calm conditions, reducing mosquito contact by 80-90%, and it does so without sprays, smells, or skin chemicals. Wind limits its effectiveness, and the running costs add up, but the alternative — being eaten alive while tending a smoker at dusk — is worse. This is not a grilling accessory. This is a grilling sanity preserver.
